CBSE has released a list of important requirements to be fulfilled by students of Classes 10 and 12 appearing for the 2026 CBSE Board exams.The notice outlines key requirements regarding attendance, internal assessments, and additional subjects for class 9 to 12.

What are the Essential Requirements for Class 10 and 12 Board Exams 2026?
- Two-year Programmes: Classes 10 and 12 are two-year programmes. The Class 10 programme comprises Classes 9 and 10, while the Class 12 programme comprises Classes 11 and 12. Hence it becomes necessary for you to study all the subjects for both the years to become eligible for the 2026 Board exams.
- Mandatory Attendance: You are expected to to have a minimum of 75% of attendance in each year in order to become eligible for the Board examination.
- Internal Assessments: Internal Assessment is a compulsory part of evaluation for all subjects as declared by the National Educational Policy 2020. If you remain absent for your Internal Assessment, your result for the Board exams cannot be declared. In case of absence or failure to attend the Internal Assessment conducted by the schools and colleges, you will be placed under the ‘Essential Repeat Category’ list.
- Additional Subjects:
- Along with 05 compulsory subjects, CBSE offers 02 additional subjects for Class 10 and 01 additional subject for Class 12. You must study the additional subjects along with the compulsory subjects for two academic years.
- If the affiliated schools have not taken permission from CBSE for the additional subjects and also lack the necessary labs and teachers, then such schools are not allowed to offer any additional subject to their students.
- If a regular student has been offered additional subjects in the previous years and has now been placed under the ‘Compartment’ or ‘Essential Repeat’ category, then the student can appear as a private candidate under the same categories.
Note: A student who does not meet the above mentioned requirements prescribed by CBSE is not allowed to take the 2026 Board exams for Class 10 and 12.
