In April 2025, Maharashtra education department had stated that Hindi will be a compulsory third language for students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes 1 to 5. This decision was part of implementing the SCF-SE, 2024, aligning with the NEP, 2020.
Following feedback from parents, educators, and language advisory committee, the education department began re-evaluating its stance. During discussions in April 2025, it was considered whether the policy should be removed or revised to allow students to opt for another Indian language as their third language, provided at least 20 students in each class expressed interest. If this condition was met, a teacher would be appointed; otherwise, the language would be taught online.
Now, Maharashtra education department has confirmed the implementation of this policy by releasing an Official Circular on 17 June, 2025.
Let’s break down the key points of this policy and what it means for schools and students.
Features of the Revised Maharashtra Three Language Policy 2025
1. Hindi as the Third Language
For students in Marathi and English medium schools, Hindi will be the third language starting in classes 1 to 5. This decision aims to standardise the language curriculum across schools, helping students build a common linguistic foundation.
2. Choice of Other Indian Languages
Based on the feedback received from various sources, the education department has decided to allow students to choose a language other than Hindi, provided that at least 20 students in the class express interest. This flexibility allows students to choose a language they feel more connected to, be it Gujarati, Kannada, or any other Indian language.
3. The 20-Student Rule and Online Classes
For a language other than Hindi to be taught in class, at least 20 students must express their willingness to learn it. If the number of interested students is less than 20, the language will be taught online.
4. Curriculum for Classes 6-10
The language policy for classes 6 to 10 will continue as per the existing framework.
5. Other Medium Schools
In schools that are neither Marathi nor English medium, the three primary languages—medium language, Marathi, and English—will be taught for classes 1 to 5.
