Hello educators and parents!
If your school’s name includes words such as ‘International’, ‘Global’, ‘CBSE’, or ‘English Medium’, it’s time to pay attention.
The Maharashtra School Education Department has issued an official notification clarifying that such terms must not be used in school names unless specific eligibility criteria are met. This move aims to protect parents, teachers, and students from confusion and misleading claims about the school’s status.

Maharashtra Government issues guidelines on school names
What is the New Maharashtra School Name Rule?
The Maharashtra School Department has observed that many schools in the state are using terms like ‘International’, ‘Global’, ‘CBSE’, or ‘English Medium’ without having the required affiliation, recognition, or international linkage. The Government has clearly stated that such practices are not legal and can lead to confusion. Incorporation of such words in school names allows scope for misinterpretation and confusion among parents and students, creating false expectations.
Why is this Important for Schools in Maharashtra?
The Education Department has directed its officers to carefully review all the school names in Maharashtra. If any name is found to be misleading, schools may be asked to change the names and submit a revised proposal to the concerned authority.
This directive implies to:
- New schools seeking recognition
- Existing schools applying for standard upgrades
- Existing schools with non-compliant names
What Should Parents and Teachers Do?
It is of utmost importance that you do not choose a school or apply for a job based solely on its name. Always verify the school’s official recognition, board affiliation, and medium of instruction before making any decision.
Final Word
This decision by the Maharashtra State Government ultimately helps parents and teachers make informed choices and ensures fairness across Maharashtra’s education system.
