The Maharashtra State Government's latest announcement on first year junior college (FYJC) admissions has stirred significant discussion among students, parents, and educational institutions in Mumbai.
For the Maharashtra 2025 FYJC admission cycle, a major revision has been made to the in-house quota policy, as reported by Times of India. Under the new rule, Maharashtra junior colleges can offer in-house quota seats only if the school and college are located on the same premises. Simply being run by the same management is no longer enough.
What is the In-House Quota for FYJC 2025 Admissions?
The in-house quota allows junior colleges to reserve 10% of their seats for students from schools managed by the same institution. Traditionally, it was done to ensure a smooth academic transition for students continuing their education within the same educational trust or group.
What Has Changed in the In-House Quota for FYJC 2025?
Previously, students from any school under the same management—regardless of physical location—were eligible for the in-house quota. However, the new rule restricts this benefit to only those students whose schools are physically situated on the same premises as the junior college. This means:
✅Eligible:
If your school and its junior college are in the same building or campus, even if they’re in separate buildings or just across the road, you can apply under the in-house quota.
❌Not Eligible:
If your school and junior college are run by the same trust but located in different areas, even if they’re just a few kilometers apart, you can’t use the in-house quota anymore.
Who does this impact most?
If you’re a student planning to continue in your school’s junior college next year, that is not located on the same premises, this new rule could directly affect your admission options.
Clarification Awaited on ‘Same Premises’ vs ‘Same Campus’
There has been some confusion regarding the wording of the rule. The Marathi version of the official document refers to schools being in the same ‘vicinity/campus,’ while the English document specifies ‘same premises.’ The Maharashtra education department has indicated that a clarification will be issued soon.
Other Changes in the Maharashtra FYJC 2025 Admission Process
To further streamline FYJC admissions, the government has also introduced online verification of student documents through the individual results portal. This eliminates the need for students to visit guidance centres. The final ‘open to all’ admission round will also be conducted online, with seats allotted purely on merit.
As you begin to navigate the updated FYJC Admissions process 2025, it's more important than ever to stay prepared—not just with documents and deadlines, but also with the right FYJC notes to start junior college on the right foot!
