The CET Cell has announced a six-month extension for candidates belonging to the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) to submit their caste validity certificates.
This decision applies to admissions for the academic year 2025–26 in engineering, medical, and other professional courses across Maharashtra.
What the CET Cell’s Decision States
To prevent such students from losing their academic opportunities, the CET Cell has issued the following decision, granting:
- A six-month grace period from the date of admission for SEBC and OBC category students 2025 to submit their caste validity certificate.
- During this period, their admissions to engineering, medical, and other professional courses will remain valid.
- Failure to submit the validity certificate within the given timeframe will result in cancellation of CET admission, and the responsibility will rest with the candidate.
Why the Extension for Caste Validity Certificates in CET Admissions 2025–26 Was Needed
The SEBC Reservation Act, 2024, implemented on 26 February, 2024, provides 10% reservation for SEBC candidates in educational institutions and direct recruitment in government services.
Following a government committee’s recommendations dated 07 September, 2023, students from the Kunbi, Kunbi-Maratha, and Maratha-Kunbi communities were recognised as part of the OBC category and became eligible for caste certificates.
However, as the process of issuing caste and caste validity certificates is still ongoing, many students have received their OBC caste certificates only recently and are yet to obtain the caste validity certificate. Without it, their admissions risk being cancelled.
To avoid disruption in the ongoing admission process, the state government has provided this six-month relaxation.
