According to the latest Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2023–24 report released by the Union Ministry of Education, Kolhapur has secured the top spot in the state when it comes to school education outcomes.
Not just that—it also ranks first among 22 districts in Maharashtra in the Prachesta-I category, a grade that highlights notable improvements in education standards.
What is the Performance Grading Index (PGI) Report?
The Performance Grading Index (PGI) evaluates public school systems across the country on a 600-point scale based on the five core parameters listed below:
- Learning outcomes
- Classroom transactions
- Infrastructure
- Digital learning
- Governance
Districts are then placed into categories ranging from lowest performing to Uttam and Utkarsh, the highest benchmarks.
The Kolhapur District scored 345 out of 600 this year, placing it firmly in the Prachesta-I category, which means it met 51–60% of the set educational targets.
It also received 161 marks in learning outcomes alone—the highest in the state.
Districts Setting a Strong Example in PGI
Kolhapur’s performance reflects the positive momentum many districts in Maharashtra are building. Other high-performing districts in the Prachesta-I category this year include:
- Satara
- Solapur
- Sangli
- Ahilyanagar
- Mumbai (Ranked 6th)
- Nagpur
- Washim
- Pune
- Jalgaon
Together, these districts are contributing to a more balanced and inclusive education landscape in the state, blending both urban and semi-urban progress.
Areas That Need More Focus
At the same time, the PGI report also helps identify districts that require targeted support. Parbhani, Mumbai (suburban), and Gadchiroli were among the lower-performing districts this year. This emphasises the need for better infrastructure, better learning tools, and outcome-focused learning strategies.
Conclusion
As Maharashtra sets its sights on reaching the Uttam and Utkarsh grades, Kolhapur is showing the way forward. Progress is possible—and is happening. The next step is ensuring that every district, regardless of geography, has the opportunity and support to reach its full potential.
