In an exciting move to enhance the quality of education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a new mandate for teachers. This rule follows the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to help teachers grow professionally and stay updated.
But what exactly does this mean for teachers and schools? And why is STEM education the big focus for 2025? Let's break it down.
In this rule, teachers are required to complete minimum of 50 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training every year. This requirement is designed to ensure that educators remain up-to-date with the latest teaching methods, tools, and educational trends.
What the CPD Training Includes:
The CPD training is divided into three key areas:
- Core Values and Ethics (12 hours): Helping teachers build strong values and positive classroom behavior.
- Knowledge and Practice (24 hours): Focusing on better teaching methods and subject knowledge.
- Professional Growth (14 hours): Encouraging leadership, communication, and personal development.
How It Works:
- Half of the training i.e 25 hours must be done through CBSE or government-recognised Regional Training Institutes.
- While the other half i.e 25 hours can be completed through in-house programmes or school complex-based sessions.
- Additionally, activities such as grading board exams, conducting research, or attending educational conferences can count toward these 50 hours.
Big Focus for 2025: STEM Education
For the year 2025, CBSE has picked STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) as the annual training theme. STEM encourages hands-on learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Thus, schools are encouraged to:
- Organise local discussions (called District Level Deliberations or DLDs) on how to improve STEM teaching.
- Foster innovation at the basic level, ensuring that every teacher has the tools and knowledge to inspire their students to explore and excel in STEM fields.
The Role of School Leaders
As with any significant educational initiative, school principals and leaders will play a crucial role in making this program a success. They will be responsible for ensuring that the teachers complete the required training and are actively involved in the STEM theme for 2025.
