The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has announced the implementation of biometric attendance for standards 11 and 12 in Maharashtra. This move will be implemented from the academic year 2025-26, reported the TOI.
What is a Biometric Attendance?
A biometric attendance system is a digital method of tracking attendance. It uses a computerised device to capture facial recognition and fingerprints. This enables an institute to track students’ attendance effectively.
Why is It Being Implemented?
The Education Department of Maharashtra aims at securing 75% compulsory attendance for students. However, at present, many students attend coaching classes to prepare for entrance exams instead of college lectures. To curb this practice, the MSBSHSE is adopting this move.
How Will It Prove Beneficial?
This initiative will put an end to fake attendance practices resulting from tie-ups between coaching classes and smaller junior colleges. It will also result in students attending college classes on a daily basis. Moreover, the biometric system will be useful to the teaching staff in colleges for better record-keeping of students’ attendance.
Hon. Former Vice President of State Headmasters’ Association Mahendra Ganpule stated that the State Board had floated this initiative two years ago as well but it faced opposition and eventually died down.
He also added, “Now that the idea is back, the State Board must do all to ensure that it takes off. There are many colleges where there is zero attendance in these classes and teachers have no one to teach. It is a waste of resources.”
