Despite the disruptions that took place with the NEET UG May 2026 examination, the latest data released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) displays strong student participation for the NEET (UG) re-exam held in June.
While registration numbers often grab headlines the recent data reveals a few interesting patterns that many students may have missed.
The newly released statistics for NEET UG Re-Exam 2026 highlight changes in candidate registrations, attendance, category-wise participation, and gender distribution over the past eight years. Some of these trends could provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of medical entrance examinations in India.
NEET UG Re-Exam 2026 Registrations Remain Above 22 Lakh
The NEET UG Re-Exam 2026 attracted over 22 lakh aspirants, reflecting the continued demand for medical admissions across the country. According to the NTA, 22,79,743 candidates registered for the exam, slightly more than in 2025. This figure, however, remains below the record registrations recorded in 2024.
Attendance Sees a Noticeable Decline
Despite strong registration numbers, attendance told a different story. Of the 22.79 lakh candidates who registered for NEET UG Re-Exam 2026, 19,99,895 appeared for the examination, leaving nearly 2.8 lakh absent. The absentee count is the highest recorded in recent years, marking a notable shift from previous editions of the exam.
Category-Wise Registration Trends
The category-wise data shows that the overall trend was similar across all major groups in 2026. OBC candidates continued to make up the largest share of NEET UG applicants. While registrations increased slightly, fewer students appeared for the exam leading to a drop in the number of qualifiers.
The General category saw a small decline in registrations compared to last year. Along with fewer registrations, both attendance and the number of qualified candidates also reduced.
For SC and ST category, registrations remained almost unchanged. However, just like the other categories, fewer students appeared for the exam. This resulted in a lower number of qualifiers than in 2025.
The EWS category was the only one to see a noticeable increase in registrations. This shows that more students from this category are choosing to appear for NEET UG. Even so, the number of students who qualified saw a slight dip, suggesting that higher registrations did not necessarily lead to more successful candidates.
Female Candidates Continue to Outnumber Male Candidates
One trend that continues to stand out is the growing participation of female candidates in NEET UG. In 2026, over 13.32 lakh female candidates registered for the exam, compared to 9.46 lakh male candidates.
State-wise Highlights
- Uttar Pradesh continued to lead the country in NEET UG participation, with the highest number of registrations, appearances, and qualified candidates. This reflects the state's consistently large pool of medical aspirants.
- Maharashtra remained among the top-performing states, with over 2 lakh students appearing for the exam and more than 1 lakh qualifying, highlighting the state's strong presence in medical admissions.
- Rajasthan once again emerged as a key contributor, recording one of the highest numbers of qualified candidates in the country. The state maintained strong participation throughout the admission cycle.
- Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also saw high participation, with both states registering over 1.4 lakh candidates. Together, they continued to be among the major contributors to India's medical entrance examination.
The number of qualifiers dropped to about 11.2 lakh compared to the previous year, reflecting an overall decline in participation and successful candidates.

Although registrations remained consistently high, the decline in attendance raises important questions about candidate preparedness, exam strategies, and participation patterns.
