The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) may retain its existing pen and paper mode even though earlier, the Centre had proposed to switch to computer-based testing (CBT) from 2027.
As per reports, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have opposed the move to shift to Computer Based Testing (CBT). A hybrid exam pattern is being considered where candidates can take NEET UG exam either through computer-based test or pen-paper mode of examination.
No final decision has been announced. The Center would like to make the transition to CBTs graduallyt so that states and students are well prepared.

State Concerns
Tamil Nadu and Kerala are concerned about the digital gap. Students from rural/remote regions may not have the proper access to computers and a strong internet connection, or proper centres to take the tests which students from urban areas will have. There is concern that a sudden change to CBT will cause issues for lower income students. The importance of school board results have also been brought up by the states.
Task Force Examining NEET UG Exam Reforms
A team of senior experts headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani has been formed to examine any possible change in India's examination system in the backdrop of recent controversy over paper leakage.
The task force will submit recommendations in two parts. The first part will focus on actions that can be taken in the NEET UG 2027 examination.

What happens next
Students should wait for an official announcement from the National Testing Agency or the Ministry of Education before changing preparation methods. The final format for NEET-UG 2027 is yet to be confirmed, and the task force’s report is expected by January 2027.
If the hybrid model is adopted, candidates may have a choice between CBT and pen-and-paper mode. Until then, the existing OMR-based format remains the confirmed mode of examination.
