In a significant development, the Madras High Court has dismissed a batch of petitions seeking to restrain the National Testing Agency (NTA) from declaring the results of the NEET (UG) 2025 examination. The petitions, filed by S Sai Priya and 15 other candidates, had asked the court to direct the NTA to conduct a re-examination for students who faced power outages at four examination centres in Chennai, which allegedly disrupted their ability to perform.

Background of the NEET UG 2025 Examination

The NEET UG 2025 exam, held on May 4, saw participation from 22.7 lakh candidates across 4,750 centres in 557 cities in India, along with 14 centres abroad. The examination was conducted across multiple locations to accommodate a vast number of students, ensuring accessibility at the national and international levels. However, candidates from four centres in Chennai claimed that the exam was disrupted due to power outages caused by sudden rain and storms.

Court's Ruling on the Re-Examination Plea

In a decision that clears the path for the declaration of results, Justice C Kumarappan dismissed the petitions, stating that there were no valid grounds to grant a re-examination. The judge emphasized that permitting a re-test for what was described as “trivial grounds” would disrupt the level playing field for more than 22 lakh students. Justice Kumarappan underscored that the NEET UG exam had been conducted fairly and that the NTA’s decision to proceed with the results without conducting a re-test was reasonable.

Power Outage and its Impact on Candidates

The petitioners argued that the power outage at the Chennai centres led to poor lighting conditions, which allegedly affected their ability to concentrate and perform well. However, the judge noted that the exam had been conducted during the day, between 2 pm and 5 pm, when ambient natural light would have mitigated the impact of the power failure. The court accepted the NTA’s scientific and field-based verification, which concluded there were no grounds for a re-examination.

The Way Forward: Declaration of Results

With the court’s decision, the delay in announcing the NEET UG 2025 results is now over. The NTA will proceed with the results, and candidates can soon find out their performance. This ruling ensures that the examination process remains fair for all students who appeared for the test, maintaining the integrity of the process.
