In a progressive move aimed at preparing students for competitive success, the Maharashtra School Education and Sports Department has announced a major shift in its academic strategy. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the state will now integrate a significant portion of its school curriculum with the NCERT syllabus. NCERT is a gold standard for national-level exams like JEE, NEET, and CUET.

Why NCERT in Maharashtra School Curriculum?
NCERT textbooks are the backbone of national competitive exams. They provide clear, concise, and exam-relevant content across core subjects. To ensure that students in Maharashtra are not at a disadvantage compared to their peers in other states, the state will now adopt NCERT textbooks for subjects like:
- Science
- Mathematics
- English
- Hindi
- Vocational Education
What’s more? These textbooks will include state-adapted illustrations and examples, making the content more relatable and meaningful for students across Maharashtra.
Keeping the Local Touch in Maharashtra School Curriculum
While national subjects will follow the NCERT pattern, state-specific subjects such as Marathi, History, and Geography will continue to be developed by the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Pune.
These will reflect not only the local heritage and culture but also incorporate broader national and global perspectives. This ensures that students gain both a strong foundation in national academics and a deep connection to their roots.
Extra Learning Support with NCERT Textbooks
To make the transition smoother and enrich learning, SCERT Maharashtra will also create supplementary materials such as:
- Handbooks
- Reference books
- Additional study aids
These resources will complement the NCERT content and help address any contextual gaps.
Bridging Language Barriers in Adoption of NCERT for Maharashtra’s Curriculum
Although NCERT textbooks are readily available in English and Hindi, Maharashtra is a multilingual state. To make sure no student is left behind, Balbharti will lead the effort in translating these material into the local language.
What’s the Next Step in Adoption of NCERT in Maharashtra Curriculum?
To formalise the adoption of NCERT textbooks, Maharashtra must sign an agreement with NCERT. A draft of this agreement has already been received. As per the instructions from the Hon’ble Principal Secretary of the School Education and Sports Department, necessary revisions are underway to finalise this collaboration.
