After the declaration of the Maharashtra SSC Result 2026, confusion began on social media and in some media reports regarding the ‘£’ symbol printed beside the percentage on SSC marksheets. Some reports incorrectly claimed that the symbol represented the ‘British Pound’.
To address this misunderstanding, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has officially clarified the meaning of the symbol through a public notice.
What Does the ‘£’ Symbol Mean in SSC Result 2026
According to the Board, the ‘£’ symbol has no connection with currency or the British Pound. It is only a symbolic notation used for the ‘Best Five’ percentage system, that is the Best of 5 Rule followed in the SSC examination process..
Under the Best of 5 Rule:
- Students appear for 6 compulsory subjects.
- The marks of the best 5 subjects are considered.
- The total marks are calculated out of 500.
- The percentage shown with the ‘£’ symbol is based on these best 5 subjects only.
This system has been in use since March 2010 as per the Government Resolution issued by the School Education and Sports Department on 25 February 2010.
SSC Marksheet Symbols Explained
The Maharashtra Board also clarified the several symbolic notations that are used on SSC marksheets and certificates. Their meanings are already printed on the reverse side of the marksheet.

- AA: Absent in a subject
- NN: Subject that is not applicable

- £: Best Five percentage calculated from the highest scoring 5 subjects

The Board has requested all stakeholders to rely only on official information and avoid believing misleading claims.
