For the first time in 12 years, IIT Delhi is releasing a revised curriculum.
This curriculum aims to put students' well-being and future careers at the heart of learning.
Starting from the 2025–26 academic year, here’s what the changes are:
1. Dual Degree in Just 5 Years
You now have the chance to complete both BTech and MTech in just five years through a new Integrated MTech course. At the end of your third year of BTech, you can choose from a range of MTech programs based on your interests.
2. Reduced Credits and Class Sizes
To make life a little easier, the number of credits you need to graduate is being reduced. And if you're just starting out, there’s more good news:
First-year class sizes are being cut in half , from 300 to 150 students. This means more personal attention and support right from day one.
3. Enjoy the Freedom to Customise Your Subject Combinations
Want to explore more than just your core branch? Now you can. You’ll be able to earn minors or honours degrees in other subjects. Whether it’s Material Science with a minor in Computer Science or Physics with AI.
4. More Practical Learning
Learning isn’t just about lectures anymore. The new curriculum puts a bigger focus on labs, tutorials, and real-world problem-solving.
5. Learning for a Better Tomorrow
From the first day, you will have an opportunity to start working with AI tools.
This includes code generators in your introductory programming courses.
Moreover, no matter what you study, you’ll take sustainability courses tailored to your field, so you're prepared to tackle global challenges like climate change and clean energy.
6. Smarter Postgraduate and PhD Options
If you are heading into a postgraduate course, you will now take on capstone (a large, in-depth assignment) projects and summer internships. This will give you real industry experience while you study.
Perhaps you’re planning to study for a PhD? If so, now you will have more freedom in your research, a strong focus on ethics, and chances to collaborate with companies on advanced projects.
Additionally, the MTech and MSR (Master of Science by Research) programs are getting a boost through more industry-based projects/workshops, communication and ethics training, and easy transitions into PhD programs.
To Sum It Up
IIT Delhi is set to implement a curriculum revision starting from the 2025-26 academic session, marking its first major update in over a decade.
This new approach is all about making learning more student-friendly, flexible, and up to par with the skills needed for today’s industries.
