A student’s name, date of birth, and other demographic details may seem small, but they become extremely important when official documents are issued.
To ensure that Classes 10 and 12 students receive their Mark Sheet-cum-Passing Certificate with correct demographic details, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued directions to schools on streamlining the process of corrections in demographic details.
The Board has highlighted that schools and parents are given several opportunities to verify and correct student information during Classes 9 to 12. However, CBSE continues to receive a large number of correction requests after the declaration of results.

Why Is Checking Demographic Details Important?
CBSE has emphasised that demographic details must be correctly recorded throughout a student’s school journey. These details are checked at multiple stages before the final passing documents are issued.
Schools are required to ensure that the details are correct in records such as:
- Admission forms
- Scholar registers
- Admission and withdrawal registers
- Transfer certificates
- Registration records
- List of Candidates (LOC)
- Admit cards
- Passing documents
CBSE Provides Multiple Opportunities for Verification
Schools and parents get about 20 opportunities to provide and verify correct demographic details during Classes 9 to 12.
The process includes:
- Class 9 Registration: Students are registered with their demographic details, which are verified and certified by parents and schools.
- Correction Window: After registration, a correction window is provided to rectify mistakes in the uploaded data.
- Registration Card: Schools are directed to download and provide the Registration Card to students so that their details can be verified.
- Submission of LOC: In Class 10, the Class 9 registration data is shown to schools while submitting the LOC. Schools are instructed to verify the information and obtain confirmation from parents.

- Post-LOC Correction: Another correction window is provided after LOC submission.
- Admit Card Verification: Before the examination, students receive their admit cards. An undertaking confirming the correctness of demographic details is obtained from the student, parent and principal.
- Passing Documents: After the result is declared, passing documents are provided along with an undertaking confirming the demographic details.
Note: The same process is repeated for Classes 11 and 12.
What Problems Has CBSE Observed?
Despite these multiple opportunities, CBSE receives many requests for corrections after results are declared. The Board has observed several issues with such requests, including:
- Incomplete requests being sent by schools.
- Supporting records from previous schools not being provided.
- Documents that are not clearly visible being submitted.
- Documents containing multiple cuttings.
- Schools not responding after CBSE asks for additional documents.
What Has CBSE Directed Schools to Do?
- CBSE has issued the following directions for strict compliance:
- Ensure that demographic details are 100% correct in all school records.
- Follow all CBSE instructions issued during registration and LOC submission.
- Obtain confirmation from parents regarding the correctness of demographic details.
- When requesting a correction, submit all certified records from every previous school where the student has studied.
- Provide complete and properly certified records to help CBSE process requests quickly.
CBSE has also stated that incomplete requests will be rejected.
Students Should Route Correction Requests Through Schools
The Board has also observed that some students send requests directly to CBSE, issue legal notices, or approach courts regarding corrections.
CBSE has advised schools to guide students to process their requests through their schools. The circular states that such alternative routes can delay the decision because the required school records may not be available with CBSE.
