Maharashtra Government Sets Up Panel for MHT-CET Admissions
The state government issued a Government Resolution (GR) announcing the formation of the panel on Thursday. Ravindra Kulkarni, who also heads the Maharashtra State Academic and Research Council (MahaSARC), will chair the committee.
The five-member panel includes the vice-chancellors of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (BATU) and COEP Technological University, along with directors from the higher and technical education departments.
Why Is Class 12 Weightage Being Considered in MHT-CET?
The move comes after concerns were raised over differences between students' Class 12 board examination marks and MHT-CET scores.
Currently, students seeking admission through MHT-CET need to secure a minimum of 45% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) in Class 12.
However, the CET Cell raised concerns about the existing criteria used to prepare the admission merit list.
According to the report, the CET Cell informed the higher and technical education department that the current system could lead to doubts among students and parents.
The issue gained attention after data showed that 202 students who scored between the 98th and 100th percentile in MHT-CET had secured only 40% to 50% marks in PCM in their Class 12 board examinations.
What Will the MHT-CET Panel Recommend?
The committee has been tasked with recommending a policy for determining the MHT-CET admission merit list by giving appropriate weightage to Class 12 marks.
The proposed policy is expected to be:
- Transparent
- Objective
- Balanced
The panel will also recommend when the policy can be implemented, keeping in mind that students should have sufficient time to prepare for both their Class 12 board examinations and MHT-CET.
Expert Panel Can Invite Subject Experts
The chairperson of the committee can invite other subject experts if required during the review process.
The panel has been asked to submit its report within 15 days.
What Happens Next for MHT-CET Aspirants?
The panel will first examine the existing admission criteria and submit its recommendations to the state government. The report will determine the basis for considering any changes to the role of Class 12 marks in MHT-CET admissions.
