Good news for young athletes! The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced national-level selection trials in Karate and Wrestling (Free-style) for students who will represent CBSE at the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) National School Games 2026–27.

Why Are These Selection Trials Being Held?
CBSE has been affiliated with the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) since 8 July 2024. As a result, national winners of CBSE Games participate in the SGFI National School Games.
For the 2026–27 session, CBSE will conduct national-level selection trials in Karate and Wrestling (Free-style) to select participants for the SGFI National School Games.
What Should Schools and Students Know?
Here are the key details mentioned in the CBSE circular:
Rules: The rules for both Karate and Wrestling (Free-style) will be the same as those followed by SGFI.
- Age and weight categories: The selection trials will be conducted across the Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 categories for boys and girls.
- Schools organising trials: Schools interested in organising the national-level selection trials can apply through the link mentioned in the circular by 5 October 2026, 2:00 p.m.
- Student entries: Schools wishing to participate must send their students’ entries directly to the organising schools by email at least five days before the event.
- Venue details: The list of venues will be communicated soon.
- Certificates: Since these are selection trials, no certificates will be issued.
- Accommodation and meals: The organising schools must make arrangements for accommodation and meals for all participants. Each participant must pay ₹500 for the same.
- Safety and security: To esnure safety and identity, entry of only authorised players will be permitted in the venue. The organising schools must provide an ID card to each participant and can charge upto ₹ 100 for the same. Each school must ensure proper insurance cover for all its members . CBSE will not be responsible for any damage or accident caused. An undertaking for the same may be taken by participating schools.
Karate and Wrestling Weight Categories
The circular includes specific weight categories for each age group.
For Karate, the categories differ for boys and girls across Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 groups. For example, the Under-14 category ranges from -20 kg to +60 kg for boys and -18 kg to +50 kg for girls. The Under-17 and Under-19 categories also include multiple weight groups.
For Wrestling (Free-style), the circular lists separate weight categories for boys and girls under Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19. These range from 35 kg to 75 kg for Under-14 boys and 30 kg to 62 kg for Under-14 girls. Separate categories for the Under-17 and Under-19 categories are also mentioned in the circular.
