Students are already using AI tools to find answers, write text, create images & videos. Now CBSE is bringing artificial intelligence into formal teaching, NCERT has developed a 20-hour introductory level module covering Classes IX-XII. The CBSE will assess this module at the school level. Separate books on artificial intelligence have also been developed for the students who want to pursue this subject at an advanced level. The change puts AI on the school agenda, but the module and official CBSE guidance will determine what students are taught and how schools deliver it.
AI literacy can help students understand how digital tools produce results, judge whether those results are reliable, and make thoughtful choices about when to use them. Those skills matter to families and teachers, too, as AI becomes more common in study and work.
Curriculum for 2026–27
The module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) was developed by NCERT with the guidance of IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur. Through a circular released on April 9, CBSE has informed about providing modules for Classes IX-XII by NCERT for internal assessment for the 2026-27 academic session. The new scheme of the board requires students of Class IX to study the CT and AI modules while students of Class X will follow the existing scheme.
Structured teaching gives students a chance to learn about AI through planned lessons, rather than relying only on what they encounter on their own. A lesson can explain a core idea, give students a way to test it, and make time to discuss its limits. That differs from using a tool without knowing how it works or whether its answer is sound.
The introductory module has been designed for students without prior knowledge of AI or programming. Instead of conventional classroom lectures, it uses games, quizzes, and practical exercises to explain basic concepts.
Government’s Role in Promoting AI Education
CBSE’s announcement signals a move toward formal instruction, while NCERT’s module offers a learning resource. The announcement and module should be read together to understand their scope.
