The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is all set to be implemented at the school level from the new academic year starting in June 2025, reports the Maharashtra Times.

What is the National Education Policy, 2020?
The National Education Policy, 2020 was introduced to replace the National Education Policy of 1986. It is a reform to transform the country’s education system into one that encourages holistic learning and critical thinking. The Ministry of Education is striving for the successful implementation of the revised NEP by the year 2028.
Stages of NEP 2020 Implementation
| Stage | Academic Year | Grade |
| 1 | 2025–26 | Kindergarten, Junior Kindergarten, First, and Second |
| 2 | 2026–27 | Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth |
| 3 | 2027–28 | Fourth, Fifth, Seventh, and Eighth |
What’s New for Students?
- Most subjects would remain the same for grades third to fifth. However, an additional subject of ‘Indian Knowledge Systems’ will be introduced from the third grade.
- History, Civics, and Geography will be combined into a single subject named ‘Social Studies’ for sixth to eighth grade.
- Two new subjects of ‘Art Education’ and ‘Pre-Vocational Skills’ will be introduced for sixth to eighth grade.
- Similarly, for ninth and tenth grade, ‘Art Education’, ‘Vocational Skills’, ‘Social Personality’, and ‘Environmental Education’ will be included as additional subjects. The total number of subjects for ninth and tenth grade will be ten.
